ABL Aluminium Decking Solves a Unique Development Dilemma!

ABL Aluminium Decking Solves a Unique Development Dilemma!aluminium decking in a unique solution

Property developer Rod Palfrey (Blue and Co Ltd) was undertaking the construction of 2 adjoining properties at Heron Lodge in Worcester. The grounds contained the former hunting lodge which was nearing completion of its restorations, but the 2 new properties were located at the edge of site with a steeply sloping rear garden.

The solution was for an upside down layout with the bedrooms on the ground floor and living rooms upstairs.

A neat solution to access the high level rear garden was to incorporate a “bridge” for each property from the kitchen to the garden.

ABL Aluminium Decking provided a number of positive features;

  • strength to carry the load with a minimum of structural steel
  • an easy to clean and safe walking surface coupled with a modern look
  • plus, with holes in the surface, light could pass through the deck so as not to cover the ground floor windows in darkness.

Rod had previous experience of using the ABL decking on another commercial project and immediately thought of its suitability when undertaking this development.

ABL Aluminium Architecture look forward to working on other projects with Rod again in the future!

The Use of Aluminium Decking in Sports Stadium Construction

Olympic Park & London Stadium Win With ABL Aluminium Deckingaluminium decking in a sports stadium

UK specialist fabricators – Darke Steel – have been working with ABL Architectural Aluminium to design, build and install aluminium steps for the gangways at West Ham United’s ground, The London Stadium (the former 2012 Olympic athletics venue).

Aluminium steps were considered ideal as they are tough enough for heavy use on match days but are also lightweight to assist with the moving in and out of position as the stadium is converted for football matches and other sports fixtures.

Cutting and installing the steps to the gangways was straightforward and the appearance of the anodised aluminium steps is atheistically pleasing and will provide a durable product for many years service.

The reason for the selecting ABL’s Designer decking was a combination of lightweight, value engineering and decking surface finish. The designer anti-slip surface pattern is ideally suited for large crowds and provides a modern and safe surface on the steps between the rows of seats ensuring safe access and exit for spectators.

The client was very satisfied with the steps which are hard wearing and will not rust. They therefore achieved the finish, durability, lightweight benefit and good value that the client was seeking.

Darke Group would be happy to ask ABL Architectural Aluminium to supply decking for future projects and both companies hope to work on other exciting installations in the future.

Why Use Aluminium Extrusions for Solar Panel Applications?

Why Use Aluminium Extrusions for Solar Panel Applications?solar panels

The solar energy industry is utilising strong and light-weight aluminium extrusions for the frames, rails and supports that ensure precision positioning and stability of their solar panel products.

The improved stability required to locate and position solar panels has come through innovations in aluminium extrusion technology. The panel power output can be affected by positional shifts of only a few degrees which results in reduced efficiency.

Aluminium Extrusions are widely used in photovoltaic (PV) mounting systems and frames, with innovative designs continuing to provide enhanced performance and reduced costs over earlier designs and certainly versus other materials, such as steel.

When properly designed extruded aluminium solutions provide long-term exceptional performance in a cost-effective manner in the most demanding environments.

The extruded systems yield exceptional performance, the lowest “total installed cost” (material acquisition, extrusion, fabrication, transportation, subassembly and final field assembly) and an end-of-life value three times that of comparable steel systems.

Even Better Quality Standards

Even Better Quality Standards!

ISO 9001ABL has recently been awarded the latest ISO 9001 quality standard by independent assessor, NQA – one of the UK’s leading quality assurance accreditation bodies.
Originally published in 1987, ISO 9001 underwent revisions in 1994, 2000 and again in 2008. The latest revision was published in September 2015 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), an agency composed of the national standards bodies of more than 160 countries.

Plan-do-check-act
ISO 9001 is based on the plan-do-check-act methodology and provides a process-oriented approach to documenting and reviewing the structure, responsibilities, and procedures required to achieve effective quality management in an organisation. Specific sections of the standard contain information on topics such as:

  • Requirements for a quality management system (QMS)
  • Responsibilities of management
  • Management of resources, including human resources and an organization’s work environment
  • Product realization, including the steps from design to delivery
  • Measurement, analysis, and improvement of the QMS through activities like internal audits and corrective / preventive action

Companies use the standard to demonstrate the ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements.
Organizations of all types and sizes find that using the ISO 9001 standard helps them:

  • Organize processes
  • Improve the efficiency of processes
  • Continually improve

2015 changes introduced
Changes introduced in the 2015 revision are intended to ensure that ISO 9001 continues to adapt to the changing environments in which organizations operate.
Some of the key updates in ISO 9001:2015 include the introduction of new terminology, restructuring some of the information, an emphasis on risk-based thinking to enhance the application of the process approach, improved applicability for services, and increased leadership requirements.

Extensive assessment
During the extensive two day assessment, ABL had to demonstrate its commitment to the enhanced features contained in the updated version. This included a series of meetings with many members of staff, all departments and the ABL management team.

The process was led by ABL Quality Manager Mike Doherty who commented, “The transitional audit was a huge success as it allowed us to demonstrate the Business Strategic Plan was linked to the Quality System, Objectives & Customer feedback.”

Aluminium Within Architecture – What Are the Benefits?

St Pauls over the millenium bridge
Have you ever considered what your walkway, bridge, deck, or steps are constructed from? The most common answer is, of course, aluminium and it will most likely be an aluminium extrusion section or profile. In fact, due to its versatility, aluminium is a staple material within architectural applications.

The growth of aluminium walkway systems in lots of different applications (i.e. food processing plants, petrochemical plants, theatrical studios, hospitals, shopping centres, sports arenas and power generation plant) is due to the benefits listed below:

Lightweight
Environmentally friendly (100% recyclable)
Aesthetically pleasing
Easily worked
Maintenance free
Non-toxic
Non-combustible
Corrosion-free

More and more of today’s architects and civil engineering designers are specifying that materials are lightweight, strong and corrosion resistant. This will include aluminium and exclude materials such as wood and steel. Aluminium is approximately two-thirds lighter than steel and offers longer life than wood. The materials have to meet the ever- exacting environmental, manufacturing, aesthetic and reduced-maintenance challenges of the 21st century. When used for walkway applications, aluminium offers design engineers and architects the optimum in design flexibility. Aluminium can be extruded into sections that require minimum processing to finish and result in modular systems that are easy to assemble.

Aluminium Decking:
Aluminium extrusion decking or planking is an option for both commercial builders and homeowners. It is naturally waterproof, and will not warp, splinter, crack, rot, or swell like timber or composite decks. What’s more, it’s designed for easy installation.

Aluminium decking is a low maintenance option that can be cleaned with soap and water, without the need for constant upkeep of paint, stain or oil. The slip-resistant, durable decking surface is designed for safety and security, with a raised punched, ribbed or serrated surface texture that is long lasting. Smooth and designer surfaces are also available.

Aluminium within Modern Buildings:
Modern buildings contain aluminium in some form or other; not just in their construction but also in the furniture, utensils and appliances. Most houses are built with brick, but wander along your high street or city arcade, and you will find buildings clad in decorative aluminium, in addition to windows and doors made with aluminium extrusions or extruded aluminium profiles.

Furniture and the Environment:
In the past, wood was commonly used in furniture for instance, but sustainability issues surrounding forestry have resulted in the use of aluminium in its place, as a sensible contribution towards the conservation of the existing forests.

Weight Savings:
Architects and designers seek materials that not only have a low impact on the environment, but are also easy to manufacture, as well as being aesthetically pleasing and corrosion-resistant. Modern shop and office door frames are made from aluminium extrusions, resulting in a considerable weight saving over wood. In single storey buildings this may not add up to much, but imagine the weight saved when aluminium is used in skyscrapers!

Aluminium extrusion has the added advantage of a high strength-to-weight ratio – even higher than steel, which weighs in at more than three times heavier than aluminium.

Versatile Material:
Aluminium is a technically versatile material, allowing for a great variety of shapes and contours. For instance, using aluminium extrusions for window and door frames allows the designer to provide interlocking sections with all the necessary in-built characteristics, such as grooves and screw retainers.

Cost Savings:
The fact that features can be designed into the extrusion means that secondary process operations (such as machining) are often removed. This saves costs overall, as well as improving the functionality of the profile or section.

Aluminium is Everywhere:
As you walk around your office, home, or shop, consider where extruded aluminium profiles have been used. There might be more than you thought!

New Component Enquiry Showcases ABL’s One Stop Shop

A new client approached ABL with some initial machined extrusion designs for feasibility and costing. The designs for railway carriage interior components were reviewed by ABL and some design changes were recommended to create a more cost effective solution. This included reducing the originally extensive amount of machining along the profile, and instead bonding in brackets where necessary. The customer welcomed the proposed changes and the component assembly was signed off.railway carriage interior components

Ongoing development revealed many variants would be required to fit around all combinations of windows, luggage racks, lights and windows in both first and second class carriages.

ABL was able to co-ordinate all varieties of parts with minimal setups and included the buying in and assembly of fixings.

The finished component assembly included a mixture of non-visible functional parts, high surface finish quality and visible powder-coated parts.

The parts were produced, labelled, wrapped and boxed up and delivered to the customer on schedule.

Even Better Logistic Services From ABL

WMH forms 3 way agreement with ABLABL is pleased to announce further developments within its Architectural division, offering an enhanced service to its customer base by joining forces with WMH Group to provide a faster delivery service into the UK. WMH is an international stockholder specialising in non-standard aluminium alloys and products. As part of a three way agreement between ABL, WMH and the raw material provider, Constellium, additional supply benefits are now available to UK and Eire customers via ABL Architectural.

Rather than calling off material from Constellium on longer lead times, WMHs central warehouse facilities in Essen Germany, are located close to the Dutch border and this will shorten delivery times to the UK. As ABL Business Development Manager, Martin Eyles, explains “Having WMH in the supply chains brings two key benefits; faster delivery times and smaller order values which we know will assist our customers in the UK and Eire”. The new agreement will allow WMH to hold larger quantities of more architectural profiles. “Now that we have a central source for European stock, there will be greater visibility of available and incoming stock, a larger range of planks held in stock and shorter journeys to UK and Irish customers”, Martin added.

He concluded, “we have had to decline smaller enquiries in the past since it was not cost effective to setup a new mill production run. We now have access to the UK-branch of WMH for fast responses to our prospective customers. This means that ABL will be able to concentrate on a more efficient marketing and sales focus to promote the architectural products whilst backing this up with an enhanced supply chain offering”

Aluminium and Aluminium Extrusions in Medical Applications

Designers and manufacturers of medical instruments, equipment and devices today look for materials that are non-toxic, light but strong, inexpensive and able to accept many types of finish.

An obvious choice for designers of medical equipment is aluminium with its unique properties, making it a natural partner for the medical industry. Its use has grown over many years thanks to its ductility, strength, durability, and lightness. When used for medical applications, aluminium offers the designer the optimum design flexibility.

Walking Frameswalking-frame

A popular use of aluminium extrusions in a medical application is walking frames both wheeled and non-wheeled. Manufactured from high tensile extruded aluminium, these walking frames are both lightweight and strong. They are often height adjustable and can be polished or painted and optionally folded for storage and transportation. Extruded aluminium is a favourite amongst designers who find the structural capacities and flexibility to be a compelling choice.

 Aluminium Mobile Hoists

disabled hoistAluminium properties make it the ideal choice for mobile hoist manufacturers. Aluminium hoists are versatile, manoeuvrable and light whilst providing the strength and durability required for this type of product. The weight saving over steel is a huge benefit when hoisting and moving people around and there is no loss of strength. Some of the sections can be extruded, formed and incorporate assembly aids resulting in reduced cost of assembly.

When not in use the hoist can be folded and stored by one person.

Environmental and Cost Advantage

In the production, manufacturing and processing of aluminium, all production scrap can be recovered and recycled without degradation. So, with its low-cost recyclability, high rate of scrap recovery and the relative abundance of its ore, designers recognise that aluminium is a highly economical and environmentally sustainable material.
