ABL has recently been awarded the latest ISO 9001 quality standard by independent assessor, NQA – one of the UK’s leading quality assurance accreditation bodies.
Originally published in 1987, ISO 9001 underwent revisions in 1994, 2000 and again in 2008. The latest revision was published in September 2015 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), an agency composed of the national standards bodies of more than 160 countries.

Plan-do-check-act
ISO 9001 is based on the plan-do-check-act methodology and provides a process-oriented approach to documenting and reviewing the structure, responsibilities, and procedures required to achieve effective quality management in an organisation. Specific sections of the standard contain information on topics such as:

  • Requirements for a quality management system (QMS)
  • Responsibilities of management
  • Management of resources, including human resources and an organization’s work environment
  • Product realization, including the steps from design to delivery
  • Measurement, analysis, and improvement of the QMS through activities like internal audits and corrective / preventive action

Companies use the standard to demonstrate the ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements.
Organizations of all types and sizes find that using the ISO 9001 standard helps them:

2015 changes introduced
Changes introduced in the 2015 revision are intended to ensure that ISO 9001 continues to adapt to the changing environments in which organizations operate.
Some of the key updates in ISO 9001:2015 include the introduction of new terminology, restructuring some of the information, an emphasis on risk-based thinking to enhance the application of the process approach, improved applicability for services, and increased leadership requirements.

Extensive assessment
During the extensive two day assessment, ABL had to demonstrate its commitment to the enhanced features contained in the updated version. This included a series of meetings with many members of staff, all departments and the ABL management team.

The process was led by ABL Quality Manager Mike Doherty who commented, “The transitional audit was a huge success as it allowed us to demonstrate the Business Strategic Plan was linked to the Quality System, Objectives & Customer feedback.”

New Component Enquiry Showcases ABL’s One Stop Shop

A new client approached ABL with some initial machined extrusion designs for feasibility and costing. The designs for railway carriage interior components were reviewed by ABL and some design changes were recommended to create a more cost effective solution. This included reducing the originally extensive amount of machining along the profile, and instead bonding in brackets where necessary. The customer welcomed the proposed changes and the component assembly was signed off.

Ongoing development revealed many variants would be required to fit around all combinations of windows, luggage racks, lights and windows in both first and second class carriages.

ABL was able to co-ordinate all varieties of parts with minimal setups and included the buying in and assembly of fixings.

The finished component assembly included a mixture of non-visible functional parts, high surface finish quality and visible powder-coated parts.

The parts were produced, labelled, wrapped and boxed up and delivered to the customer on schedule.

Even Better Logistic Services From ABL

ABL is pleased to announce further developments within its Architectural division, offering an enhanced service to its customer base by joining forces with WMH Group to provide a faster delivery service into the UK. WMH is an international stockholder specialising in non-standard aluminium alloys and products. As part of a three way agreement between ABL, WMH and the raw material provider, Constellium, additional supply benefits are now available to UK and Eire customers via ABL Architectural.

Rather than calling off material from Constellium on longer lead times, WMHs central warehouse facilities in Essen Germany, are located close to the Dutch border and this will shorten delivery times to the UK. As ABL Business Development Manager, Martin Eyles, explains “Having WMH in the supply chains brings two key benefits; faster delivery times and smaller order values which we know will assist our customers in the UK and Eire”. The new agreement will allow WMH to hold larger quantities of more architectural profiles. “Now that we have a central source for European stock, there will be greater visibility of available and incoming stock, a larger range of planks held in stock and shorter journeys to UK and Irish customers”, Martin added.

He concluded, “we have had to decline smaller enquiries in the past since it was not cost effective to setup a new mill production run. We now have access to the UK-branch of WMH for fast responses to our prospective customers. This means that ABL will be able to concentrate on a more efficient marketing and sales focus to promote the architectural products whilst backing this up with an enhanced supply chain offering”
